Our approach to light: continuous LED, not multi-flash

This is where our tours differ from most, and it is worth explaining. The industry standard for hummingbird photography is multi-flash — several speedlights firing to freeze the wings. It produces sharp results, but it also produces a very recognisable look: hard light, often black or artificial backgrounds, and a rendering that many photographers now feel is over-saturated in the market.

We work differently. We use continuous LED lighting that blends white and warm light to lift the low light of the cloud forest without introducing the artificial character of flash. The difference in practice is significant:

To be clear about the trade-off, because you should know before you book: continuous LED does not freeze a hummingbird's wings the way multi-flash does. If a wing-frozen, studio-style hummingbird portrait is your specific goal, another operator may suit you better. What we offer instead is natural-looking images with real light and real backgrounds — and, for many photographers, a more honest and more beautiful result.

Where we photograph

Our home region is one of the finest bird photography areas on the planet. The cloud forest above Cali — the KM18 / San Antonio area — holds some of the best feeder setups in Colombia within an hour of each other, with the endemic Multicolored Tanager, Red-headed Barbet, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, and a forest blind for the endemic Chestnut Wood-Quail. On the Choco slope the legendary feeders deliver Toucan Barbet and Velvet-purple Coronet. The overcast, misty light these forests are famous for is the natural equivalent of a giant softbox — the reason this region is so kind to a camera.

Limited to 6 photographers - and why that matters

Photography needs space and time in a way that birding does not. Everyone needs a clean angle on the perch; everyone needs to wait for the moment. That is why every one of our photo tour departures is strictly limited to six photographers — no exceptions. Six is the number at which a hide or feeder setup still works for everybody: nobody is shooting over a shoulder, nobody is queuing for the good position, and there is room to set up tripods without crowding. Beyond that, the experience degrades fast.

A hard cap also shapes the whole day. With six photographers we build around images rather than a long species list: early starts for the first light at the feeders, unhurried sessions at the best setups, natural mossy perches placed beside the feeders so your shots look wild rather than staged, and time to actually work a subject instead of glancing at it and moving on. It also means departures fill quickly — with only six places, popular dates close early.
