Colombia is the most bird-rich country on Earth, and for photographers that means something specific: more photogenic subjects — dazzling tanagers, jewel-like hummingbirds, comical barbets and toucans — at close range, in beautiful light, than almost anywhere else. But a great bird photography tour in Colombia is about far more than pointing a lens at a rich country. What makes a great bird photography tour

There is a real difference between a birding tour that allows some photography and a true bird photography tour. On a photography tour, the whole rhythm is built around images. In the Western Andes cloud forest around KM18 — at El Descanso, Finca La Florida, and the hummingbird mecca of Finca Alejandría — feeders bring the endemic Multicolored Tanager, Red-headed Barbet, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, and a blind for the endemic Chestnut Wood-Quail to within metres. On the Chocó slope toward Anchicayá, the legendary feeders of Doña Dora deliver Toucan Barbet, Velvet-purple Coronet, and a wall of tanagers. And on the Cauca Valley floor, dry forest and the Sonso wetland add endemics and waterbirds for variety.

Hummingbird photography: a Colombian specialty

Colombia has more hummingbird species than any country on Earth, and our region is one of the best places to photograph them. At feeder clusters you can work on Velvet-purple Coronet, Empress Brilliant, Booted Racket-tail, Long-tailed Sylph, and many more.
