Day trips from Cali: a lot of birds, very little time

A day trip is ideal if you are in Cali for work, passing through on a wider Colombia trip, travelling with non-birding companions, or simply want to test the waters before committing to a longer tour. Because Cali sits at the meeting point of three biogeographic regions, even a single day can be remarkably productive — and each direction from the city offers a completely different habitat.

A practical middle path worth considering: start with a day trip early in your stay. If it lights the fire — and it usually does — we can often extend into additional days while you are still here, building an itinerary around the birds you have not yet seen.

What a day with us looks like

We collect you from your hotel in Cali before dawn, drive to the day's first site, and bird the best of the morning light — often starting at a feeder station where the birds come to you, then working a quiet forest road as the flocks move through. Breakfast happens in the field, usually with hummingbirds at arm's length. Depending on the plan we either continue at the same site or move to a second habitat, and you are back in Cali by late afternoon or early evening. Transport, entry arrangements, meals in the field and guiding are all handled; you bring binoculars, a camera if you shoot, and a rain layer.

Planning your birding around Cali

Whatever length you choose, two things help. First, go early — bird activity drops sharply by mid-morning, so an early start is worth far more than a long day. Second, tell us your targets.
