Birding & Bird Photography Day Trips from Cali

Cali is the most bird-rich city on Earth, and one of its greatest gifts is how much you can see in a single day. Within a couple of hours of the city lie cloud forests, Choco rainforest, dry woodland and wetlands — each with its own set of birds. Whether you have one free morning or a spare day between other plans, a guided day trip is the easiest way to experience it, for both birdwatchers and photographers.

Every trip below is led personally by Julio Delgado, a Cali-based, fully bilingual (English/Spanish) photographer-guide with 15 years in these forests. We collect you from your hotel before dawn, handle all transport, access and logistics, and tailor the day to whether you have come to build a list or to make images. Small groups; all levels welcome.

Dona Dora (Anchicaya)   the Toucan Barbet capital

The most famous feeder site on the Choco slope, and for good reason. A resident family of Toucan Barbet is present almost permanently beside multi-level feeders that also draw Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Rufous-throated and Silver-throated Tanagers, and hummingbirds like Velvet-purple Coronet and Empress Brilliant. Visitors regularly record 30-60 species in a morning within a tiny area — superb for photographers, and a joy for birders. Expect rain; it is the Choco, and that is exactly why the birds are here.

Finca La Florida (KM18)   cloud forest & a wood-quail blind

The closest true cloud-forest experience to Cali, in the celebrated KM18 area. La Florida's forest blind offers a rare chance at the endemic Chestnut Wood-Quail, while its feeders bring the dazzling endemic Multicolored Tanager, Colombian Chachalaca, Crimson-rumped Toucanet and a steady stream of hummingbirds. With over 340 species recorded in a small, accessible area and activity all morning, it is the ideal half-day introduction to Andean birding — or a full day combined with nearby KM18 sites.

Yotoco Lodge (AM) + Alas de los Alpes (PM)   a full day, two habitats

A complete day pairing two complementary sites. Spend the morning in the Yotoco Lodge feeders. Our birding basecamp in the Western Andes of Colombia at Km 26 is built with photographers in mind — a genuine bird photography lodge. It has On-site set-ups: feeders and perches at the lodge, including the world-exclusive hand-feeding endemic Apical Flycatcher, the striking Green- Inca Jay, the hard to get Whiskered Wren, among many other tanagers, and hummingbirds.                                                                    After lunch, we will move to Alas de los Alpes for an afternoon at its feeders and viewpoints — an easy, productive session of hummingbirds and tanagers at close range, ideal for photography in the softer afternoon light including the gorgeuous endemic Multicolored Tanager.

This day also pairs naturally with a stay at Yotoco Lodge, our family-run base beside the reserve — a comfortable way to bird this area over more than a day.

San Cipriano   Choco lowlands by rail cart

Drive from Cali: ~2 hours + brujita     Habitat: Choco lowland rainforest     Great for: Adventure, lowland Choco specialties

The most adventurous day of the set. San Cipriano is reached only by "brujita" — a wooden cart pushed along old rail tracks by a motorcycle — through humid Choco lowland rainforest. The habitat holds a completely different, lowland set of birds from the cloud forest above Cali: the enigmatic Sapayoa (a genuine world target), Five-colored Barbet, Rose-faced Parrot, Club-winged Manakin and a rich antbird understorey. Over 300 species recorded. Hot, humid, likely wet — and unforgettable.

Rio Bravo   a wild, still-quiet reserve

Drive from Cali: ~2 hours     Habitat: Subtropical Andean forest     Great for: Serious birders, quality over crowds

A Key Biodiversity Area in the Western Cordillera near Lake Calima, still relatively unknown and all the better for it. Rio Bravo's forests hold a remarkable list — reported to represent a large share of Valle del Cauca's birds — including the endemic Rufous-breasted Anttrush, Multicolored Tanager, Toucan Barbet, Parker's Antbird, Tatama Tapaculo, Golden-winged Manakin and Purplish-mantled Tanager. This is a birder's day — quieter, wilder, and rewarding for those who enjoy working forest and flocks rather than only feeders.

Atuncela   dry forest near Dagua

Drive from Cali: ~1 hour     Habitat: Dry shrubland & humid transition     Great for: A different habitat, dry-forest specialties

A recently expanded protected area near Dagua, protecting a rare and threatened habitat: the dry forest of the Cauca Valley, transitioning to humid tropical forest. It offers a completely different set of birds from the cloud forest, with the Blue-headed Sapphire and Ruby-topaz Hummingbird among the draws, plus migrants in season. Over 130 species recorded in the newly protected sector, and the reserve now shelters threatened birds including the Banded Ground-Cuckoo. A good, easy half-day that adds real variety to a Cali birding trip.

Laguna de Sonso   the Cauca Valley's great wetland

Drive from Cali: ~1 hour     Habitat: Ramsar wetland & dry forest     Great for: Waterbirds, an easy relaxed morning, endemics on the edges

The last great marsh of the Cauca Valley, a Ramsar wetland with over 390 species recorded. Sonso adds a dimension no other day here offers: waterbirds — herons, egrets, ducks, rails, jacanas, Snail Kite, and the extraordinary Horned Screamer, whose only regional population lives here. The dry forest on its edges adds the endemic Grayish Piculet and Apical Flycatcher. An easy, productive and relaxed morning, with an observation tower and boat options — and it sits right beside Buga and Yotoco, so it pairs beautifully with a cloud-forest afternoon.

What's included on every day trip

Every day trip includes hotel pick-up and drop-off in Cali, all ground transport, your bilingual photographer-guide, reserve entrance arrangements, breakfast & lunch. Bring binoculars, a camera if you shoot, sun protection and a rain layer — the cloud forest and Choco can be wet in any month.

Trips leave early — usually 5:00 to 5:30 a.m. — because bird activity peaks in the first hours after dawn. Photographers and birders are equally welcome, and we tailor the pace and the sites to what you want from the day. Two or more days?
